If you are like me, you don’t like eating food “dry”.  A condiment can take an otherwise bland and boring meal and change it into something pretty darn edible.  However, a condiment can also take a healthy meal and turn it into a fat or sugar bomb.  Over the next few weeks I will be blogging about none other than…condiments!    So starting off my condiment series, will be one of the most popular…ketchup.

Tomatoes and tomatoes are healthy, right?! Right- very healthy in fact.  However, once that high fructose corn syrup (bad bad bad) is added to create the ketchup, it becomes a sugar laden condiment and as we know… sugar/high fructose corn syrup does NOT equate to healthy and lean!

While ketchup is low in fat and calories, it comes in at 4 grams of sugar per tablespoon which will add up quickly.  I am not advocating getting rid of ketchup entirely, but do watch your portions or better yet, pick up a low sugar version that does not have the high fructose corn syrup (Heinz makes a good one).   Coming in at only 1 gram of sugar and 5 calories per tablespoon, this low sugar version is a much better option for those of us who are keeping our sugar low.
