This morning as I lay in bed scrolling through the channels trying to figure out what to watch while in a state of pure exhaustion and nursing a mild hangover, there it was: Father of the Bride. Perfect. This was now a no-brainer. I clearly stopped looking for anything else right then and there and tuned in. And to make things even better, Father of the Bride Part II was going to be on right after. Done and done. Looks like I had the next 3 hours of my morning mapped out. Of course I have seen both of these movies hundreds of times, but when they are on TV, I feel the need to watch them (or DVR and watch later). I just owe it to myself to do this, natch.
Father of the Bride is one of those movies that brings me back to my childhood. They just don’t make quality flicks like these anymore and even though I own a good handful of the movies of my youth, I just can’t seem to pass them up when they are on TV. Why would I watch them without commercials when I can easily throw in the DVD? Cause I’m a huge loser? Perhaps. But that’s beside the point. It’s always exciting to me when they are on. These movies make me smile. These movies make me happy. And these movies make me feel young again (to a certain degree). And what’s better than having one of your favorite movies come on TV on a lazy weekend morning? Pretty much nothing.
When I see the following movies, I can recite most of the lines and totally know what’s going to happen, but still don’t want to miss any of the action. I feel like most of these hit home for most girls in their late 20’s to early 30’s. These are the movies we grew up to. The movies that taught us such great life lessons and values and gave us some of our fabulous fashion sense back then. Well, maybe not, but they damn sure entertained us. Here are some of my fave childhood flicks that I know many girls my age can relate to and I would assume love as well.
Troop Beverly Hills: My absolute fave movie ever. (Don’t judge.) I can sing the entire “Cookie Time” song (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UrxJiBOpu60) with absolutely zero shame. Beverly Hills, what a thrill.
Can’t Buy Me Love: Ah, a young Patrick Dempsey. Super adorable as the nerdy lawn boy. Not to mention I totally wanted to be Cindy Mancini when I was younger. She was just so freaking cool.
Goonies: This one will never, ever get old! Ever.
Pretty Woman: I remember the first time I watched this when I was a little older and finally figured out that those were condoms she was taking out of her boots and not candy! Poor naïve young me.
Dirty Dancing: Who didn’t want to be Baby? Who didn’t want to do that final dance with Johnny? C’mon now. Swoon.
The Cutting Edge: “Toe Pick.” Need I say more? When I was younger I ice-skated and always thought it would be awesome to be a pair skater with my husband. Then I was introduced to basketball and quickly abandoned that dream.
Girls Just Wanna Have Fun: Those outfits. Those dance moves. SJP does her thing in this one.
Adventures In Babysitting: OMG, I totally wanted Christ to babysit me. It looked like so much fun. Like such an adventure if you will. Ahhh. Additionally, whenever I have friends come home with me to Chicago, I point out the Adventures in Babysitting building to them. (Along with some John Hughs movie location spots as well.)
Revenge of the Nerds: Not a chick flick, but I had to throw it in here because its still a total classic to me and makes me laugh out loud each time I see it. And there is even a little musical number (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=L4Wl2r_VlhA) that I can sing along to, word for word.
Girls, am I the only one who loves these movies? Did I miss one of your faves on here? These are simply the best. Perfect for a rainy day. Perfect for a sunny day. Pretty much perfect for any day you want to put a smile on your face.
