The speculation is over. The rumors can all now end. The time is here. Last night, organizers of the Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival that takes place annually at the Empire Polo Club in Indio, California announced the lineup for the 2014 version of Coachella. And yup…it’s pretty ridic. Arcade Fire, Muse, and a reunited Outkast serve as the top three headliners for the two weekend stint in the desert which takes place during the weekends of April 11-13, and April 18-20. Peep this lineup.
Ummm yeah…pretty insane huh?
FRIDAY APRIL 11th AND APRIL 18th
The top of the iceberg for me on Friday (and the whole weekend for that matter) is the reunion of Outkast. Big Boi and Andre 3000 created one of the most formidable duos in hip hop history in the mid 90’s and went on to create 5 amazing hip hop classics. Like any good successful hip hop group, both members of Outkast, after a long period of working together, had visions of going solo. Call it creative differences, the ability to take risks and chances musically, getting sick of one another, or just needing time apart, Big Boi and Andre 3000 made the last Outkast album, a double album, with each emcee having the ability to showcase their solo skills with their own discs on the double album. Speakerboxx/The Love Below showcased both artists talents and originality. Speakerboxx became the first solo project from Big Boi, who would also go on to release two other high quality albums Sir Lucious Left Foot: The Son of Chico Dusty and Vicious Lies and Dangerous Rumors. All three of Big Boi’s solo albums showcased his impressive lyrical skills and delivery, and showed how eclectic of an artist Big Boi really is. Andre 3000, on the other hand took a break from music after releasing the amazing The Love Below. He decided to focus on acting, primarilly his movie career. He appeared in Four Brothers, Semi-Pro, and Idlewild. He is currently shooting the movie All Is By My Side, playing the title role of Jimi Hendrix, the role of a lifetime. Andre would make cameo appearances on other people’s projects to stay close to music and keep his skills sharp. But continued to say publically that he didn’t know when or if Outkast would ever reunite again. Despite their ability to dominate the mic as soloists, Outkast truly works best together as a unit, which is why this reunion in the desert at Coachella is a big f’n deal. I am sure this won’t be the duo’s only festival appearance this year. Hopefully this collaboration will bring out a new album and more tour dates to follow, but this has been the biggest Coachella rumor floating around over the past couple of months and now it’s truly official. Seeing Outkast live in the desert is enough of a reason alone to go out and get these tickets.
Outkast is not the only notable act on the Friday slot. Zedd, Ellie Goulding, Broken Bells, Chromeo, the ladies of Haim (one of my faves) Neko Case, Bastille, Aloe Blacc, the Replacements, Grouplove, ASAP Ferg, and the Afghan Whigs also bless opening day slots. Not a bad way to kick off your festival.
SATURDAY APRIL 12th and APRIL 19th
Saturday, IMO, is the best day of Coachella. Muse, the new age masters of prog rock are headlining. One thing about Muse, they kick ass live. If you have never seen a Muse show, you are in for a treat. Their light show is pretty spectacular and they take performing live to a new level. I didn’t love their last album, so this is the weakest of the three headliners to me, but you will walk away with a new level of respect from these three Brits after seeing them perform. They never disappoint.
What gets me really excited about Saturday is the undercard. Queens of the Stone Age had a great 2013 thanks to their last album, Like Clockwork. The band is back in the studio now working on the follow up, so they will be sure to rock the hell out of one of the main stages at the Empire Polo Club. Skrillex brings the funk and the heat back to the desert for another main stage slot. Pharell Williams will get “happy” all over Indio at Coachella. Pharell is working on his solo album now which is due out in the beginning of 2014. Lorde will be bringing her intriguing style and sound to Coachella for the first time. Expect a huge crowd to see her. Foster the People will be rocking the Saturday set. Their sophomore album is due out within the next two months and it is supposed to be a huge departure from their freshman gem, Torches. Pet Shop Boys, Nasir Jones aka Nas, The Head and the Heart, Empire of the Sun, MGMT, Kid Cudi, Chvrches, (another Jones and B fave) City and Colour, Capital Cities, Cage the Elephant, the Naked and Famous, Solange, Foxygen, and Sleigh Bells are all set to rock on Saturday as well. Can you say conflict? Party goers will have a lot of tough decisions to make in terms of who to watch on this day. It’s jam packed.
SUNDAY APRIL 13th AND APRIL 20th
The final day of the weekend is no slouch either. Canada’s finest, Arcade Fire, make their return to the Empire Polo Club, and they are going to make Coachella dance. Arcade Fire, since their inception, are known as one of the best live acts around. They are incredible live. I have had the pleasure of seeing them numerous times before and they never have let me down. I know that they will be super stoked to rock Coachella because this will be the largest US crowd that they will be playing for on their Reflektor tour. I am pretty sure Arcade Fire will be headlining some of the other major US festivals this summer, but as of now, Coachella is their biggest stop scheduled on their upcoming US tour. Supporting a new album is one of the highlights for a band when they release new material. The songs off Reflektor sound like they will all translate well live. Arcade Fire is a big band with many members. You can hear many different sounds floating around all over Reflektor. Expect those sounds to be heard all over their Coachella set. I have no doubt that Arcade Fire’s closing performance will be one of the most talked about and remember sets of the entire weekend.
Arcade Fire are not the only ones to look out for on Sunday at Coachella. Beck is making his return to Indio this year supporting his upcoming album. Beck is one of the most respected names in music today. He will put on a standout performance in the desert with new and classic selections from his diverse catalog. Sunday brings the return of the Neutral Milk Hotel. 90’s alternative heads will get a kick out of that. Calvin Harris and Disclosure bring EDM to the polo grounds on Sunday. Be prepared to dance your asses off. Lana Del Ray, Alesso, Little Dragon, Chance the Rapper, Motorhead, Krewella round out some of Sunday’s other notables. This seems like the “Dance heavy” day of the festival. If you still have energy left after two days in the desert, this will be one kick ass party to end your weekend experiences.
Coachella is great because it’s the first major festival of the year. It’s also the trendy festival because it’s located in California, and not a far ride from LA, so alot of the stars come to hang out at Coachella. It’s also an extremely fashion forward experience. People come dressed to the nines in creative and authentic ways at the Empire Polo Club. Coachella is a place where all types of people submerge and party together. All walks of life come alive at Coachella, nothing is out of bounds and off limits. It’s an amazing experience. I had the pleasure of going in 2012, and it’s an something that I will never forget. If you have never made it to a Coachella, this is a pretty good year to check it out. And when you go, turn it into a vacation. VIP is definitely the way to hang if you can afford the dough. Being up close and personal with the artists is pretty cool and the pool parties and accomodations that come with it are definitely worth your while. General Admission tickets are $375 for the weekend and VIP passes are $799. You can also camp out at Coachella, which will be a whole other level of awesomeness added into your festivale experience.
