We here at Jones and B recognize greatness for what it is. Kendrick Lamar got robbed last night at the Grammy Awards. He was nominated for seven Grammy Awards and walked away with NONE. Yup,¬†none. He arguably made the best of album of the year with¬†good kid, m.A.A.d. city, which was universally recognized as a modern day classic from critics, rap purists, rap historians, and musicians of any genre, but yet the Academy couldn’t find it in their souls to reward this young artist with some Grammy hardware. It’s kind of a slap in the face to be nominated for seven awards and win none, especially when he lost four of those categories (with three of them being rap categories) to Macklemore and Ryan Lewis. Macklemore even went on record and said that Kendrick got robber and should have won Bes Rap Album. But it is what it is. It is why people will continue to label the Grammy’s out of touch, or too white, or a waste of time, because they often get things wrong. I just personally felt bad for Kendrick, who despite having the year of his life, wasn’t able to take anything home on music’s biggest night. However he did deliver one of the top three best performances of the night, performing a remix to “Radioactive” with Imagine Dragons where he shared lyrics from “Swimming Pools” and today’s SOTD, “m.A.A.d. city.” The crowd at the Staples Center were on their feet, and if you didn’t know who Kendrick Lamar was before that performance, you definitely knew who he was after it. I hope this won’t be the last time Kendrick is nominated for a Grammy. This dude is too talented to not come back even harder with his next effort. But this night will sting for a little bit, because he should have won something. Kendrick Lamar is today’s SOTD because at Jones and B, we recognize what’s real and what’s quality.
