Today’s SOTD is from another act that has ripped through SXSW this week, the Dum Dum Girls. Dum Dum Girls are the brain child of singer/songwriter Dee Dee Penny, otherwise known as Kristin Welchez. Dum Dum Girls are named after The Vaselines album¬†Dum Dum and Iggy Pop’s song “Dum Dum Boys.” It’s definitely an odd name for a band but hey, different strokes for different folks. The band is an all female throwback to the 80’s. Kinda like a reincarnated Bangles, but much better. They sound like a hybrid of the Go-Go’s, Siouxsie and the Banshees, and early Madonna. “Rimbaud Eyes” from the Dum Dum Girls latest album,¬†Too True, is today’s SOTD. This song and the album makes me feel like im watching “Less than Zero.” It’s very 80’s influenced, but the songs have rich melodies and are extremely catchy. Dee Dee wrote all of the songs on the album. The synths and drum machine that embody many of the albums tracks will definitely provide a nostlgia trip if your over the age of 28 but the music is pure indie pop fun. A couple of listens to “Rimbaud Eyes” and you will find yourself singing along to the chorus instantly.
