Ever since I heard Sharon Van Etten’s 2010 album Epic, I was instantly a fan. That love was sustained and grew deeper after the release of 2012’s Tramp. Tramp was an artistic gem that Van Etten crafted with the Dessner brothers of the National. She became a strong performer through that record. She came into her own as an artist through that record. There is a certain eloquence about Van Etten’s music. It’s incredibly personal, raw, and layered. Although it’s folk rock based, the music gives a sense of indie credibility through her honesty and her approach to harmonies and melody that is slightly unconventional yet unique and respected. This chick can write a song. She’s got the vocal and writing chops. I am happy to say that she back with a new album, titled Are We There, which is set for release in May of this year from Jagjaguwar records. The first release from that album is today’s SOTD, “Taking Chances.” Notice the rasp of her voice and use of harmonies on this track. They help give the song it’s edge. I believe that Sharon Van Etten is one of the most underrated artists making music today. And she’s from Jersey. Boo-ya! Enjoy “Taking Chances,” the new single from Sharon Van Etten.
