One of the cool things about working at the high school that I work at is our awesome bell system. We play music at the change of every period. All week long one of the songs that has been playing on this week’s musical rotation is “Roni” by Bobby Brown. Hellllllloooooo, flashback! YES!!! “Roni” is the ultimate R&B slow jam. Is it not? This is Bobby Brown, former New Edition teen star, at his finest.¬†Don’t Be Cruel, Brown’s 1988 signature album really put Bobby on the map as a bonafide superstar. The world had known about him from New Edition, but that was a collection of elite vocal talent. With¬†Don’t Be Cruel, Brown’s second album, people really began to notice him and he became much bigger than New Edition ever was. That album produced five hit singles including “Don’t Be Cruel,” “Every Little Step,” “Rock Witcha,” his number 1 single “My Prerogative,” and today’s SOTD that reached number 2 on the Billboard Top 100, “Roni.” The album was produced by L.A. Reid and Babyface, who were the hottest R&B producers out at the that time. “Roni” is just a bad ass jam and it stands up with today’s musical climate. Heads don’t make R&B like they used to in the 80’s. Hearing “Roni” all week makes me wish the genre could make a strong come back. Where’s Bobby when you need em? And, don’t you miss that haircut? Bobby Brown made the “Gumby” a reasonable hair style in the late 80’s. Gotta give him props for that!

Here is Bobby with New Edition on their 30th Anniversary tour performing “Roni”
