Happy New Year folks. Sorry I have been away from you for a hot minute. Hopefully everybody enjoyed their holidays and are ready to get right with amazing music for the 2015 year. I know I am energized to hit you off with a certified banger for the first SOTD in 2015. The championship belt for today goes to PRhyme, the duo consisting of Royce da 5’9″ and DJ Premier featuring the smooth sounds of Dwele, with their single “You Should Know.” First off, how incredible is it that DJ Premier, of the historic rap dup GangStarr, is back making regular music. RIP to Guru. Preemo has been known throughout the last 20 years as one of the supreme producers in hip hop. His raw, NYC style of hard and distinct breakbeats while cutting up a record with ill samples made his structure unparallel to anyone elses. If you were a true rappers emcee you couldnt wait to get on a Preemo beat. Many of the illest emcees in the game from Biggie, Jay-Z, to Nas have all laced DJ Premier beats. This time, Premo teamed up with Slaughterhouse’s own Royce da 5’9,” one of the most underated rappers in all of hip hop. Straight out of the Shady Records fam, Detroit’s own Royce has been murdering the underground rap scene for awhile now. He has achieved some main stream prominence with his collabo LP with Eminem titled Bad Meets Evil, but has been 1/4 of the Slaughterhouse crew for the last couple of years. I had a feeling something was going on when I heard Preemo produce a couple of Slaughterhouse records but was really blown away when I listened to PRhyme, the duo’s first full length collaboration. This album is hip hop at it’s absolute finest. “You Should Know,” is just dope in every way possible, Fans of that great mid 90’s authentic NYC hip hop will be all over this joint. And you can’t go wrong when Dwele is singing your hook. “You Should Know” is a great way to start your Tuesday and make sure you cop that PRhyme album. It’s fantastic.
